Okafor Says Grassroots Football Can Help Keep Nigerian Youths Away from Crime
Football enthusiast and legal practitioner Stanley Okafor has urged governments at all levels to invest more in age-group and school football. He said organised competitions could give young people social and economic opportunities while helping to prevent juvenile delinquency, cultism and crime. Speaking in Onitsha after Nigeria’s Flamingos beat Japan 2–1 to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Okafor praised the team and called on football administrators to build on their achievement. He also noted that the victory made Nigeria the first African country to win the tournament in both the men’s and women’s categories.
