Can Morality Exist Without Religion? My Question to Atheists

I asked atheists what guides their moral convictions if they reject religion and belief in God. My question was not whether Christianity or the God of the Bible is morally superior. I wanted to understand the basis for deciding why certain actions are right or wrong. The discussion shifted to criticisms of the Bible instead of answering that question. I raised issues such as teenage premarital sex, child gender transition and same-sex unions. Some people called these acts immoral, but I did not find their explanations convincing. Saying that religion is unnecessary for morality still leaves the question of where moral standards come from. Some people pointed to traditional values and ancient societies. However, I believe many of those values were shaped by religious beliefs, including African traditional religion and the faiths of ancient civilisations. In my view, people can reject religion while retaining moral ideas formed within religious cultures. My concern is that parents who raise children without a clear moral and religious framework may find that their children adopt values they do not share. A word is enough for the wise.
