Debunking Myths About the South-South Region’s Legitimacy

This post answers why the South-South is a geopolitical region, not a cardinal direction. It reminds readers that the former South-Central State (1967–1976) also lacked a geographic “center” but was named and accepted without question. It explains that “South-South” simply denotes the southernmost zone in the South. This area lies farther south than the South-East or South-West, while no single northern zone can claim to be the most northern. It refutes the idea that the South-South was created to divide. Edo and Delta were never part of the old Eastern Region, so they were never separated. Ironically, some critics who reject this zone still call for a sixth state in their own area for “balance.”

Have you ever wondered why we still debate South-South legitimacy despite similar historic names like the old South-Central State?

But how exactly are people defining "legitimacy" here—by history, culture, or politics?

It does feel odd to question a region's legitimacy when South-Central State existed without any geographic center either.

We shouldn't dismiss concerns so quickly, though, since names often shape identity and political clout in our regions.

Maybe tying regional labels to clear historical boundaries would help reduce all this confusion going forward.
