Boko Haram, ISWAP Storm Monguno Base, Kill Commander and Six Soldiers
Gunmen on motorbikes attacked the 242 Battalion barracks in Monguno, near the border with Chad. The commander and six soldiers died when their vehicle hit an improvised mine, sources told Reuters. At least 12 militants were killed during the gunfight. The assault was claimed by Boko Haram and its splinter group, Islamic State West Africa Province. This raid follows a wave of coordinated attacks on military posts in Borno State. Insurgents have tightened their grip across the northeast, looting weapons and mounting pressure on the government. President Tinubu has vowed to end the 17-year insurgency that has killed thousands and displaced millions.
