WHO Warns Global Cancer Cases Could Reach 35 Million Annually by 2050
The World Health Organization warns that if urgent action is not taken, annual new cancer cases could soar to 35 million by 2050. The latest WHO Global Status Report on Cancer 2026 highlights that cancer already causes over 26,000 deaths each day and more than 20.6 million new cases every year. The report outlines stark global inequalities in prevention, diagnosis and treatment. It shows that 87% of women with breast cancer survive five years in wealthy nations, compared with just 42% in low-income countries. Less than one-third of countries include comprehensive cancer care in universal health coverage. WHO leaders stress that survival should not depend on where someone lives or their income. Nearly four in ten cancer cases link to preventable risks such as tobacco use, infections and obesity. The organisation urges governments and partners to strengthen universal health coverage and ensure equitable access to cancer care worldwide.
