Why Africa’s Size Does Not Automatically Mean It Can Feed More People
Africa is vast, but land size alone does not determine how many people a continent can support. Water availability, soil quality, rainfall patterns and irrigation matter far more for agricultural productivity. For example, farmland in wetter parts of southern Nigeria, such as Osun or Imo, can often support more intensive maize production than similar land in Borno. Southern farmers may plant maize more than once yearly, while farmers in the far North often depend on irrigation for additional cycles. Africa also contains the Sahara, the world’s largest hot desert, where large-scale agriculture is difficult. India is far smaller than Africa, yet its fertile and well-watered regions support a much larger population and substantial food production. Natural resources such as crude oil are valuable, but reliable water remains the foundation of food security, farming and human survival. Water is life.
