Reform NYSC to Let Graduates Serve Closer to Home, Writer Urges
Recent reports of corps members being kidnapped while travelling for service have renewed concerns about the safety of young Nigerians posted far from home. I believe the Federal Government should reform the NYSC scheme to allow graduates serve in their state of origin or a region of their choice. If the programme cannot guarantee reasonable safety, it should be replaced with an eight-month public service fellowship. Such a fellowship could combine work experience with entrepreneurship, digital skills, renewable energy training, agriculture, public-service education and conflict-resolution programmes. The goal should be to prepare graduates for employment and self-reliance without exposing them to avoidable danger.
