While credible intelligence must be investigated, unverified tip-offs can be weaponised to disrupt opponents and shape public perception. Raids, arrests and public allegations can damage a campaign before any evidence is tested. Security agencies should therefore verify intelligence thoroughly, use formal investigative processes where there is no immediate threat, and avoid premature publicity that fuels trial by media. The police, military and intelligence services must remain neutral and accountable to the Nigerian people. Professional, lawful and restrained conduct is essential to protecting voters’ right to free, fair and peaceful elections.
