Anambra’s Monday Sit-at-Home Cost: N8bn Lost Weekly as Soludo Rolls Out Market Reforms
Anambra used to lose over eight billion naira every Monday to the sit-at-home order. The Special Adviser on Trade and Markets, Hon. Evarist Uba, praised Governor Soludo for new access roads in all major markets and the clearance of the Ochanja Roundabout refuse dump. These moves, he said, will help end the shutdown soon. He noted that reopening Onitsha Main Market and Nnewi Auto Spare Parts Market sent a strong warning to other traders. Anyone who defies market rules now faces similar sanctions. Since 2023, peace has returned to markets under the adviser’s leadership. Caretaker committee chairs must now be traders with identifiable shops. This ensures they know and protect traders’ interests while enforcing revenue collection. Governor Soludo has also relocated three markets and plans a new Market Law to keep order. His goal is to make Anambra a top trading destination rather than a mere passage point.
