How Table Tennis Players Decide Who Serves First
Under ITTF Rule 2.13.1, the first server is chosen by lot, usually with a coin toss. Players may also hide the ball in one hand and let the opponent guess which hand holds it. The winner can choose to serve, receive or select a side of the table. Informal methods include rallying before the point, or using the “ping for serve” routine to decide who starts.
