IGP Disu Urges Police Officers to Prepare for Proposed State Police

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has asked police officers to prepare for the proposed introduction of state police, saying the Federal Government is committed to the reform. At a workshop on state policing, Disu said police leaders must educate officers about the proposal and address concerns about how the new structure would work. He said the reform is a national project, not one for the Nigeria Police Force alone. The IGP said the police developed a framework within 17 days after studying policing systems in countries including India, the United States and Pakistan. He added that the framework is still being refined with input from retired police chiefs and other experts. The proposal has renewed concerns about political interference and whether state governments could use state police against opponents or allow misconduct by unqualified personnel.
