Defence Minister: Bandits Threaten to Kill Oyo Schoolchildren if Troops Advance
The Federal Government says security forces delayed action against bandits who abducted 39 pupils and seven teachers in Esinle, Oyo State. Defence Minister Christopher Musa told News Central that the kidnappers warned they would kill all captives if troops moved closer to their hideout. Musa explained the bandits aim to exchange the schoolchildren and teachers for the release of their detained commanders. He said the warning was meant to force the government into freeing their leaders currently in military custody. The minister warned that existing penalties are too soft and called for tougher sanctions, including the death penalty, to deter future attacks. Security agencies continue efforts to secure the hostages while balancing rescue risks.
