Aceh Province Publicly Flogs Couple 21 Times for Kissing on TikTok Live

A young couple in Indonesia’s Aceh province received 21 lashes after a Shariah court convicted them of kissing during a TikTok livestream. Their original sentence was 25 strokes but was reduced because they had already served four months in prison. The public caning took place on July 2 in Banda Aceh’s Bustanussalatin City Park. About 100 people watched hooded enforcers carry out the punishment on stage. The pair, a 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, were arrested in April after their viral February livestream. Aceh is the only Indonesian province enforcing Islamic law. Since 2006 it has had the right to implement Shariah, which allows up to 100 lashes for offences like adultery, gambling and certain dress or behaviour violations.
