Roy Keane Says Awoniyi’s Red Card Was Harsh but Avoidable

Roy Keane has described Taiwo Awoniyi’s red card for Coventry City against Brighton as harsh, while admitting the Nigerian forward gave the referee a decision to make. Awoniyi was sent off shortly after half-time following an aerial challenge in which his elbow connected with Brighton defender Maxim de Cuyper. The decision was reviewed and upheld by VAR. Keane said Awoniyi did not appear to make a clear swinging motion, but added that raising his elbow left him vulnerable to a dismissal. The red card means Awoniyi is expected to serve a three-match suspension.
