After three years away in Rivers State, I returned to Ikono for my grandfather’s memorial. At Nkwo market, I ran into Mfon, my old primary-school classmate. Her familiar smile and easy laughter brought back feelings I did not expect. She gave me garri as a Christmas gift and refused to take my money. I could not stop thinking about her, so I returned to the market the next morning just to see her again. But Mfon’s spot was empty. A nearby akara seller told me she had travelled to her aunt’s house in Ikot Ekpene and would return the following day. She also pointed me towards Mfon’s family home, warning that her mother is protective because many boys pursue her. Should I visit her house tonight and risk making a bad first impression, or wait until she returns to the market tomorrow?
