Landmark Verdict: Meta and Google Must Pay $3M for Woman’s Social Media Addiction

Landmark Verdict: Meta and Google Must Pay $3M for Woman’s Social Media Addiction

In a landmark Los Angeles case, a jury found Meta and Google liable for 20-year-old Kaley’s addiction to Instagram and YouTube. Kaley said she began watching lip-gloss and kids’ game videos on YouTube at age six and bypassed her mother’s block to join Instagram at nine. She told jurors endless feeds, autoplay features and constant notifications damaged her self-worth and made her abandon hobbies. After a month of testimony—including from Kaley and Meta leaders—the jury concluded the platforms were negligent in design and failed to warn minors of the risks. They awarded Kaley $3 million in damages. Meta has appealed and Google had no immediate comment.

I agree, this decision might finally push platforms to rethink their youth engagement policies.

True, this ruling could pressure big tech into policy shifts, but I doubt it'll tackle youth addiction fully.

It's interesting that the jury blamed companies rather than personal responsibility or parental controls in her social media use.

I no sure say tech giants fit carry all the blame when Kaley and her mum had tools to limit her use.

Parents and guardians should explore built-in screen time settings and open conversations about healthy online habits from an early age.
