Sunday Oliseh: Super Eagles Lack the Quality Players of Past Generations

1 / 3

Former Super Eagles captain and coach Sunday Oliseh says Nigeria’s recent struggles are down to a shortage of top-quality players. Speaking on a sports programme, Oliseh said many people are avoiding what he considers the real issue. He argued that the current squad does not match the standard of earlier generations who played regularly for Europe’s leading clubs. Oliseh cited his Ajax side, Finidi George, and Taribo West at Inter Milan as examples. He described Victor Osimhen as the team’s standout player, but said Nigeria no longer has several players competing at the very highest level in Europe. His comments follow a difficult period for the Super Eagles, including missing out on the 2026 World Cup and disappointing recent results.
