Oba of Benin Suspends Isikhuan Praise Group Over Performance at Igbinedion’s Home
Oba Ewuare II has indefinitely suspended the Isikhuan royal praise-singing group for allegedly performing at the home of the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion. The Benin Palace said the performance breached customs that reserve the traditional display solely for the Oba. The decision followed an emergency palace meeting. The group’s leader, Juliet Omogui, was stripped of her traditional Okao title and ordered to return the royal Okuku headgear to the palace. Palace officials also criticised Chief Igbinedion for allowing the performance despite his knowledge of Benin traditions.
