Six Iranian Dissidents Sing Song of Defiance in Prison Before Execution
In smuggled February footage, six Iranian protesters are seen singing a defiant ballad in the courtyard of Ghezel Hesar prison. Their final act of resistance rings out in Farsi just before they face the hangman’s noose. The men — Vahid Baniamerian, Babak Alipour, Abolhassan Montazer, Pouya Ghobadi, Ali Akbar Daneshvarkar and Mohammad Taghavi — were charged with armed rebellion and executed between late March and early April. Electrical engineer Pouya Ghobadi endured torture before his execution on March 31. In another secret recording, Vahid Baniamerian directly addressed the Supreme Leader, calling on the world to shift from words of concern to decisive action against Iran’s policies. Montazer, who had survived 11 years under the Shah, and law graduate Babak Alipour also made last pleas in smuggled videos. Human rights groups report that Iran carried out at least 1,639 executions in 2025, the highest annual total in 37 years.
