Niger State Court Sentences Four Men to 95 Years for Gang Rape of 13-Year-Old
A Senior Magistrate’s Court in Minna has handed a combined 95-year jail term to four men convicted of gang-raping and impregnating a 13-year-old girl in Kontagora last year. The convicts—Salisu Baura, Lawali Shaibu, Haruna Musa and Saidu Bello—threatened the victim, abused her and paid her ₦1,400. They were arrested by the NSCDC’s Kontagora Divisional Command and prosecuted at the state headquarters. During trial, the magistrate described their actions as animalistic and heartless. Evidence included video and written statements, the medical report of penetration, the victim’s testimony, and a voice recording. Three witnesses appeared for the prosecution, and no plea was entered due to the severity of the offence. Magistrate Christy Barau ruled that the first three convicts serve 20 years each for unlawful sexual intercourse with a child, plus five years for joint act. The fourth man, still at large, received 20 years for unlawful intercourse with a child. An NSCDC spokesman thanked the court for the ruling.
