Drug Abuse and Silent Youth Deaths: Warning Signs and How to Respond

Drug-related deaths among young people can happen quietly, often when someone is alone or when alcohol, prescription medicines and illicit drugs are mixed. Opioids, sedatives and unknown substances in counterfeit pills can slow breathing until it stops. Warning signs may include sudden withdrawal from family, declining school performance, secrecy around money or phones, extreme mood changes, slurred speech, repeated nodding off, or major weight changes. These signs do not always mean drug use, but they should prompt a calm and supportive conversation. Prevention requires honest drug education, better mental-health support, and less stigma around asking for help. If someone is unresponsive, breathing slowly, or cannot be awakened, call emergency services immediately, place them on their side, stay with them, and give naloxone if it is available and an opioid overdose is suspected. Young people struggling with substance use deserve medical care and support, not shame. Speak with a healthcare professional, counsellor, trusted adult, or a recognised substance-use support service as early as possible.
