Adepoju Laments Golden Eaglets’ Failure to Reach 2027 U-17 AFCON
Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has described Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations as shocking and painful. The Golden Eaglets were eliminated from the WAFU B U-17 Championship in Burkina Faso after losing 2-1 to Niger Republic and drawing 1-1 with Côte d’Ivoire. The result means Nigeria will also miss the 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar. Adepoju said the setback was difficult to accept because of Nigeria’s long record in youth football. The Golden Eaglets have won the U-17 World Cup five times, but they also failed to qualify for the 2025 edition. He said Nigeria must examine why it is losing ground in youth competitions that once produced many of the country’s top players.
