Experts Debunk ‘Genital Theft’ Myth After Vigilante Assault in Rivers State
Health and legal authorities in Rivers State have dismissed viral claims that a person’s sex organ can be stolen by touch or spiritual means. The state branch of the Nigeria Medical Association explained that no biological mechanism supports such beliefs. Instead, victims experience Koro syndrome, a documented psychiatric condition where anxiety and fear cause false sensations of shrinking or disappearing genitals. Medical experts say calm reassurance, psychiatric support, and public health education are needed. A human rights lawyer pointed out that such allegations lack legal basis. Under Rivers State law, false accusations of witchcraft or organ theft can be prosecuted as criminal offenses. The lawyer also condemned the role of a local vigilante group whose alleged torture of a suspect undermines due process and erodes public trust in community policing. Both experts urge communities and security agencies to prioritise evidence-based medical evaluation and lawful procedures over fear-driven vigilante action.
