If Jesus Were a Nigerian Boy, Would He Escape Discipline After Three Days Away?
Luke 2:41–52 tells the story of Jesus at age 12, when he remained in Jerusalem after the Passover festival without his parents knowing. Mary and Joseph searched for him anxiously for three days before finding him in the temple, listening to teachers and asking questions. As a Nigerian father and carpenter, I keep wondering: wetin I go do if my 12-year-old pikin waka comot for three days without permission? Na serious discipline go follow. The funny part is his response: “Why were you searching for me?” For our Naija setting, would a child not need permission before leaving home? The passage also leaves many questions about Jesus’ early life, since the next major account comes when he begins his public ministry around age 30.
