Edo Celebrates Dr Ekiomado Eki-Udoko, First Female Neurosurgeon in Edo and Delta
Dr Ekiomado Eki-Udoko has become the first female neurosurgeon from Edo and Delta states, as well as the former Midwest Region, after completing her specialist training and receiving certification from the West African College of Surgeons. Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo received her in Benin City and praised her achievement. He said the state would support her professional development and efforts to improve specialised healthcare services. The National Orthopaedic Hospital, Benin, also described her accomplishment as a major milestone. The hospital said it recruited her in 2025 to strengthen neurosurgical and trauma-care services for patients in Edo, the South-South and other parts of Nigeria. Eki-Udoko said the journey required perseverance and support from her family. She added that she plans further training in neurosurgical subspecialties, noting that only seven female neurosurgeons exist nationwide, with five currently practising in Nigeria.
