Why Are There So Many Christian Denominations?
Christians have formed many denominations over time because they moved away from purely following scripture. They built identities around creeds, leaders, and traditions that partly deviated from the Word. This tendency creates walls among believers. The Bible warns against dividing over names and traditions. In 1 Corinthians 1:12–13, Paul criticizes those who say “I follow Paul” or “I follow Apollos,” asking, “Is Christ divided?” 1 Corinthians 11:19 adds that heresies reveal who truly stands for the Word. Jesus also cautioned that human traditions can nullify God’s commands (Mark 7:7–9, 13). When traditions replace revelation, denominations emerge and multiply.
