Mass Kidnappings Threaten Nigeria’s Democracy and 2027 Elections
Nigeria marks the 33rd anniversary of June 12 and 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule amid a surge in abductions. Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) warns that insecurity—from highway kidnappings to school attacks—undermines democracy and the rule of law. Data shows 4,722 people were abducted in 997 incidents between July 2024 and June 2025, with at least 762 fatalities and ₦2.57 billion paid in ransom. CAPPA highlights the trauma faced by children, women and young girls held captive. Disturbing videos of torture and forced appeals expose the human cost and deepen public fear. The organisation urges the government to scale up rescue operations, improve communication with affected families, and invest in intelligence, community policing and social development to safeguard citizens and protect voter participation ahead of the 2027 elections.
