Wike: 70% of FCT Projects Completed Were Left Abandoned for 16 Years

Wike: 70% of FCT Projects Completed Were Left Abandoned for 16 Years

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike, has revealed that about 70% of the infrastructure works finished under President Tinubu’s administration were contracts awarded 15 to 16 years ago but left incomplete. Speaking at his monthly media forum in Abuja, Wike said the president instructed that no viable government project should be abandoned. He explained that the FCT Administration prioritised reviving inherited projects before launching new ones to avoid wasting public resources and to deliver critical infrastructure to residents. While overseeing the completion of those old works, the minister noted, the administration also initiated new road and infrastructure projects across Abuja and its satellite towns. He credited President Tinubu’s decision to remove the FCT Administration from the Treasury Single Account for making funds more accessible and accelerating development. Wike affirmed that the FCT Administration will continue executing projects aimed at improving transport networks, opening up new districts, and enhancing the quality of life for residents of the nation’s capital.

How did projects awarded 15 years ago remain unfinished until now, and what might this mean for current FCT development prospects?

I agree, this lingering backlog really undermines confidence in project delivery and slows FCT's progress.

It seems odd that 70 percent of supposedly 'completed' FCT infrastructure dates back to contracts awarded under a different administration sixteen years ago.

I'm not convinced these delays solely reflect negligence; sometimes procurement snags or bureaucratic hold-ups play a bigger role.

One way forward is to audit those long-dormant contracts, identify bottlenecks, and allocate targeted funds to finally wrap up the abandoned FCT projects.
