Okobo Council Halts Suspected Illegal Mining and Dredging, Demands Reclamation Plans
Okobo Local Government has issued stop-work orders at suspected illegal mining, sand dredging and borrow-pit excavation sites across the area. A council taskforce inspected locations in Nsie, Eweme, Udung Uloh, Oyoku Assang/Udung Ovin and Afaha Akai after residents raised concerns about land degradation, disturbed waterways and the safety of community water sources. Officials reported seeing extensive excavations, turbid streams and dredging equipment at some sites. Operators have been directed to present their mining approvals, agreements with host communities, corporate social responsibility commitments and land-reclamation plans. The council says it supports lawful investment but will act against operations that endanger residents, farmlands, waterways or public safety.
