INEC: AI Will Support, Not Replace, Human Decisions in Elections
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan says artificial intelligence should strengthen election integrity and public confidence, not replace human responsibility in electoral decisions. Speaking at a responsible AI and elections conference in Ottawa, he said Nigeria’s large-scale elections make technology essential. He cited BVAS, IReV and biometric identification systems as tools intended to reduce errors and manual interference. Amupitan said INEC has created an AI division, developed a roadmap for phased adoption and is preparing an AI governance framework. He added that an intelligent results-management process is being introduced to help flag discrepancies in election records. He stressed that AI use must be guided by human oversight, transparency, privacy protection, cybersecurity and clear operational value.
