Otu Threatens to Withdraw Recognition From Traditional Rulers Over Yakurr Violence
Cross River Governor Bassey Otu has warned traditional rulers that they could lose their certificates of recognition if violence continues in their communities. The warning followed the recent Ugep-Idomi communal clash in Yakurr Local Government Area, which reportedly claimed lives. Speaking through his deputy at the Leboku International New Yam Festival in Ugep, Otu described the violence as unacceptable and said the festival was retained to promote peace and unity. The governor said the state would not recognise factions in the Agoi Ibami leadership dispute until they reconcile and present one accepted traditional leader. He also pledged ₦50 million to renovate Ugep Peace Stadium. Officials said sustained peace, better infrastructure and improved communication were necessary for Leboku to continue attracting tourism, investment and development to Yakurr communities.
