Nigerian Press Council Representative Chinyere Facah Elected to African Media Councils Board

Chinyere Reginald Facah of the Nigerian Press Council has been elected to the board of the Network of Independent Media Councils in Africa (NIMCA). The election took place at the network’s inaugural assembly and second annual general meeting in Johannesburg. The meeting brought together media-regulation leaders from across Africa to discuss self-regulation, accountability, funding and threats to press freedom. Participants raised concerns about censorship, attacks on journalists, internet shutdowns and restrictive media laws in several African countries. Facah’s election gives Nigeria a role in NIMCA’s leadership as the network works to strengthen ethical journalism, independent media regulation and cooperation among African media councils. She said she would work to make Nigeria and the Nigerian Press Council proud.
