Ghana TV Stations May Lose Licences Over Unauthorized Nollywood Airings
Television stations in Ghana risk losing their broadcasting licences after allegations they download and air Nollywood films from YouTube without permission or payment. The National Film Authority in Nigeria, backed by its deputy executive secretary and Ghanaian actor James Gardiner, plans to work with regulators to crack down on offenders. They cite the rapid growth of digital broadcasters and the difficulty of tracking stations that operate without physical offices as major challenges. Proposed sanctions include revoking existing licences and requiring fresh applications under stricter conditions. Broadcasters would have to prove they hold the necessary rights for all films and other copyrighted content. The move aims to protect Nigerian filmmakers by ensuring they receive proper compensation and recognition for their work.
