Has Portugal Moved On From Cristiano Ronaldo Too Soon?

Cristiano Ronaldo’s reported departure from the Portugal camp has reopened a familiar debate: is the national team better without him? Ronaldo started Portugal’s 1-0 win over Wales but was substituted in the second half. He was later left on the bench against Norway as Portugal secured another win through goals from Joao Felix and Goncalo Ramos. Reports of tension between Ronaldo and coach Jorge Jesus followed, although the coach said the matter had been resolved. Portugal must now show that reducing Ronaldo’s role will produce better results. Ronaldo helped lead the country to major trophies and holds the records for the most international appearances and goals. The post-Ronaldo era will be judged by whether Portugal can match or surpass those achievements.
