Nigeria and UK Sign Agreement to Deport Failed Asylum Seekers and Offenders
Nigeria has reached a deal with the United Kingdom to accept deportees who failed asylum claims, overstayed visas, or committed offences. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood signed the pact during President Tinubu’s state visit. Under the terms, Britain will use alternative identification letters for migrants without valid passports to speed up removals. Around 961 failed asylum seekers and 1,110 foreign national offenders are expected to return. The agreement also boosts joint operations and intelligence sharing to fight visa fraud and criminal networks. While officials say the deal shows Nigeria’s commitment to its international obligations, critics warn it may turn the country into a dumping ground for refugees from Muslim-majority nations. I worry Nigerian Christians could feel overwhelmed after years of Boko Haram and herdsmen violence.
