South Africa to Forfeit and Sell Assets of Undocumented Nigerian Immigrants

South Africa to Forfeit and Sell Assets of Undocumented Nigerian Immigrants

South African authorities will confiscate and auction properties owned by Nigerian immigrants found living in the country illegally. No compensation will be paid. Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi said assets acquired by undocumented immigrants are treated as proceeds of crime under South African law and will be forfeited to the state. Funds from the sale will boost crime-fighting efforts and support victims of crime. This announcement follows renewed xenophobic attacks that have led Nigeria and several other African countries to evacuate citizens from South Africa.

I'm not convinced confiscating assets without compensation will deter illegal immigration more than improving legal pathways.

Before traveling, verify your immigration status and consult reputable legal advisers to avoid asset forfeiture risks abroad.
