Tinubu Hails Wole Soyinka as ‘Global Icon’ on His 92nd Birthday

President Bola Tinubu has marked Wole Soyinka’s 92nd birthday with a glowing tribute. He described the Nobel laureate as a rare global icon whose life inspires through literature, courage and a steadfast stand for justice. Tinubu praised Soyinka’s literary achievements and unwavering advocacy. He highlighted the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986 and other major honours that underscore Soyinka’s global impact. Recalling their shared fight to restore democracy after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election, the President honoured Soyinka’s decades-long resistance to authoritarian rule. He called the playwright a living repository of history and wise counsel. Tinubu thanked Soyinka for his enduring faith in Nigeria and wished him many more years of health. He acknowledged the writer’s lasting influence on scholars, activists and generations of Nigerian storytellers.
