Lagos Empowerment Handouts: Are Sewing Machines Taking Priority Over Public Services?

Lagos Empowerment Handouts: Are Sewing Machines Taking Priority Over Public Services? — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Lagos has recently distributed sewing machines, grinding machines, deep freezers, generators and cash grants as part of its empowerment programmes. These items can offer immediate relief to widows, young people and small-business owners. However, residents should also ask whether such interventions are receiving priority over deeper public-service failures. Many communities still lack reliable pipe-borne water. Public schools and health centres face shortages, while insecurity, poor roads, flooding and inadequate drainage continue to affect daily life and raise business costs. Equipment handouts may be visible and quick to deliver, but they cannot replace the systems that support millions of residents. Lasting empowerment should include investment in water networks, public safety, quality schools, equipped hospitals, roads and drainage. Direct support for small businesses has value, but Lagos needs a budget debate that places foundational public services ahead of publicity-driven interventions.
