Can a True Child of God Truly Fall Away?
Many people assume that missing church, questioning God or going through a difficult season means someone has backslidden. I do not think it is that simple. Job and Jeremiah both expressed deep pain before God, yet they were not abandoned by Him. In 1 John 2:19, John says that those who left were not truly part of the believers in the first place. Jesus also taught that His sheep know His voice and will not follow a stranger. According to John 10, no one can snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I believe a person can appear to fall away, but someone truly held by God will not be deceived into destruction. Hebrews 12 also teaches that God disciplines His children. If there is no correction at all, it is worth asking whether that person truly belongs to Him.
