Nigerian Nursing Student Held in India Cyber Fraud Bust
Police in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, have dismantled a major cyber fraud ring led by Nigerian students. Authorities arrested MSc Nursing student Saifu Mayana Umar and several associates after linking them to at least 16 cases of investment scams. Victims nationwide were lured with promises of high returns through fake foreign firm investments and stock trading. Funds were swiftly withdrawn via multiple bank accounts and ATMs. Investigators traced roughly 4.5 million rupees in Umar’s account tied to reported cases, mostly from southern Indian states. Inter-state cyber teams from Telangana and Tamil Nadu coordinated with Meerut police to locate Umar at his hostel. Searches yielded a laptop, ATM cards, bank passbooks, mobile phones and other items. Forensic exams are under way to map the broader network after some documents were destroyed. Authorities have filed complaints through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and are seeking transaction records from banks. Umar was released on notice with his passport seized and confined to university housing pending further investigation. Warrants are being prepared for other suspects, and international cooperation may be sought.
