Awka Anglican Chancellor Rejects Removal, Demands Apology From Supervising Bishop
The leadership crisis in the Anglican Diocese of Awka has deepened after the diocesan Chancellor, Barr. BEI Nwofor, rejected his removal by Bishop Samuel Ezeofor and demanded a retraction and apology. The Church of Nigeria reportedly suspended the Bishop of Awka Diocese, Alexander Ibezim, for six months over allegations linked to the sale of church properties. Bishop Ezeofor of Aguata Diocese was named to supervise Awka during the suspension. Nwofor said the Awka Diocese constitution does not recognise an office called “Supervising Bishop” and argued that Ezeofor lacks the authority to remove him as Chancellor. He described the removal letter as damaging to his reputation and threatened legal action if it is not withdrawn.
