Bayelsa Targets 300,000kg of Local Rice by End of 2026
Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri has urged young people to treat agriculture as a career and business opportunity rather than wait for white-collar jobs. Speaking at the state’s World Food Day event in Yenagoa, he called for greater use of flood-tolerant crops, aquaculture, processing facilities and cold-chain storage. The state said it has begun dry-season farming at Otuasega Farm and installed rice mills at Niger Delta University and the Federal University, Otuoke. It also said thousands of farmers across Bayelsa’s eight local government areas have received seedlings, inputs and other support. The agriculture commissioner said more than 17,300 farmers had received support since 2020, while 2,106 farmers, fishers and processors received grants this year. He added that the state’s 410-tonne-per-day rice mill is operational, with a target of producing 300,000 kilogrammes of Made-in-Bayelsa rice by the end of 2026. The All Farmers Association of Nigeria presented Diri with an award for agricultural connectivity and farmer support.
