How the CBN’s Interest-Rate Cut Could Affect Loans, Savings and Prices
Monetary policy may sound technical, but I see its effects in everyday life. It can influence the cost of business and personal loans, returns on savings, the value of the naira, investment decisions and the prices households pay for basic goods and services. Inflation means prices are rising. When inflation slows, prices may still increase, but at a slower pace. This can gradually make household budgets more predictable and help protect the purchasing power of incomes. At its September 2026 meeting, the Monetary Policy Committee cut the Monetary Policy Rate from 26.5% to 23%. I do not expect bank lending rates to fall immediately, as banks consider other costs and risks. However, the cut could gradually affect borrowing, savings, business investment, employment and consumer spending as monetary conditions ease.
