Archaeologists Find Evidence Supporting Holy Sepulchre as Jesus’ Traditional Burial Site
Archaeologists excavating beneath Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre have uncovered an ancient quarry, cultivated land, rock-cut tombs and traces of a garden. The findings were outlined in a preliminary study published in the Jerusalem archaeological journal Liber Annuus. The landscape has features that closely resemble Gospel accounts of Jesus’ burial, including a garden and a newly cut rock tomb near the site of the crucifixion. Researchers also found evidence of olive trees and grapevines dating to the Roman period. The discovery does not conclusively prove that the tomb belonged to Jesus. However, the researchers say it strengthens the historical case for the Church of the Holy Sepulchre as an early Christian site of worship connected to his burial and resurrection.
