Nnaji Blames Tariff Policy and Funding Gaps for Nigeria’s Unstable Power Supply
Former Power Minister and Geometric Power founder Barth Nnaji says non-cost-reflective tariffs, infrastructure deficits and funding problems have prevented DisCos from providing reliable electricity since privatisation. He made the remarks at a Lagos Country Club forum on November 1, 2026. Nnaji argued that investors were discouraged when the government did not allow tariffs to reflect the cost of supplying power. He said the government would need to fund subsidies if it wanted to keep tariffs below cost. He also pointed to the sector’s debt, the high cost of power infrastructure and the lack of partial risk guarantees for investors. According to Nnaji, these factors have limited investment in new power plants and contributed to ongoing supply challenges.
