Ejiofor Warns 2027 Elections Could Bring Widespread Political Violence
Human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor warns that Nigeria could face one of its most violent election periods in 2027. In a commentary dated November 7, 2026, he points to reports of political attacks, intimidation and suspected thuggery in several states, including an incident in Katsina where three suspects were reportedly arrested after a vehicle was set ablaze and political posters were destroyed. Ejiofor cites figures from the 2023 electoral cycle, which recorded 586 election-related violent incidents and 348 deaths across 274 local government areas, according to an international election observation mission. He says the recruitment of young people into political violence puts them and the public at risk while sponsors may avoid consequences. He urges young Nigerians not to risk their lives for politicians’ ambitions and calls on INEC, security agencies, political parties, the National Peace Committee and the Federal Government to act before the threats escalate.
