Questions Raised Over Authenticity of Catholic Youth Letter on Partisan Politics
I have concerns about the authenticity of the open letter circulated under the name “Catholic Youth Association of Nigeria.” Nigeria’s recognised Catholic youth umbrella body is commonly known as the Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria (CYON). The letter uses the acronym CYON even though “Catholic Youth Association of Nigeria” would ordinarily be shortened differently. Its contact details also appear to match CYON, while the letterhead uses a different name, logo and slogan. I also cannot identify the signatory as the known national president of CYON. These inconsistencies raise questions about whether the letter was issued by the recognised Catholic youth body.
