US President Donald Trump has ordered a renewed blockade of Iranian ports, barring Iranian ships and customers from entering the Strait of Hormuz. He also announced a 20% levy on all cargo passing through the vital waterway to cover the cost of providing security in the region. The move follows Iran’s plan to charge its own tolls on commercial vessels, after US and Israeli action against Iran in late February. The US exemption window of 60 days will allow ships safe passage while negotiators seek a final deal. Meanwhile, Iran will enter talks with Oman and other Gulf littoral states to define future administration and maritime services in the strait, in line with international law and coastal states’ sovereign rights.
