Rivers School Petitions Monarch Over Alleged Virginity Tests on Female Students
Tension has risen in Taabaa, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State after Government Comprehensive High School staff accused the community’s paramount ruler of subjecting female students to virginity tests. In a petition to the Rivers State Ministry of Education dated October 12, 2026, the school management also alleged that the ruler entered the school premises without authorisation and took over its farm. The petition called for an investigation, saying the alleged practice had persisted for years. The monarch denied taking any student for medical virginity testing. However, he said he conducts annual roll calls asking students who are virgins to identify themselves, and that he rewards those who do. A rights group has urged the state to set up an independent panel to investigate, describing the allegations as possible violations of children’s rights and dignity.
