NESREA Warns: Littering Can Attract Six Months in Jail or ₦20,000 Fine

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency says dropping refuse on the ground, including used recharge cards, can attract a minimum six-month prison term or a ₦20,000 fine under its sanitation and waste-control regulations. A NESREA official in Kaduna said the agency prefers voluntary compliance to punishment. Organisations that violate environmental regulations may also face higher penalties. The agency says it works with markets, religious bodies, civil society groups and other government agencies to promote proper waste disposal. It has also carried out sensitisation and enforcement activities, including the sealing of facilities belonging to defaulters.
